Fibroscan

Painless, needle-free, 10-minute non-invasive assessment of liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and fatty liver (CAP score).

Fibroscan (Transient Elastography – Liver Scan)

By emitting a gentle low-frequency shear wave through a surface probe, Fibroscan provides instant numerical measurements of Liver Stiffness (in kPa) and Fatty Liver / CAP Score (in dB/m) without needles, incisions, or sedation.

What to expect

You will lie on your back with your right arm raised behind your head.
A gel-coated probe is placed gently against the skin over your upper right ribcage.
The probe delivers mild, painless pulses (feels like a light tap on the skin).

Prep Instructions

Fasting is Mandatory: Fast strictly for 3 to 4 hours before your Fibroscan slot. Eating increases blood flow to the liver, which artificially inflates stiffness readings.
Plain water is allowed in small quantities.

FAQ’s

Why is 3-4 hours of fasting strictly required before a Fibroscan?

When you eat, your digestive system directs a large volume of blood flow to the liver to process nutrients. This increased blood volume temporarily swells the liver, causing it to appear stiffer on ultrasound shear waves than it actually is. Fasting ensures accurate baseline stiffness readings.

In most clinical cases, yes! Fibroscan is non-invasive, takes only 10 minutes, carries zero bleeding risk, and samples a volume of liver tissue 100 times larger than a needle biopsy. However, your physician may still order a needle biopsy if rare autoimmune or metabolic conditions need tissue staining.

No, it is completely painless. You will only feel a soft, gentle flicker or tap on the skin over your right ribcage as the probe emits painless acoustic waves.
